EUROTUNNEL, the consortium that will operate the Channel Tunnel, has
been given leave to carry passengers inside their vehicles, despite fierce
criticism from safety experts and the fire service. The decision means that
Eurotunnel can now continue its scheme more or less as planned. Rethinking
its designs would have threatened the finance of the entire project. Representatives
from the British and French governments told Eurotunnel on Tuesday that
it need not separate passengers from their cars provided the system meets
certain safety conditions.
