Victor Papanek’s latest book on design and the environment The Green Imperative (Thames and Hudson, £14.95 pbk, ISBN 0 500 27846 6) manages to avoid the dictatorial style of many writers on design. Instead Papanek’s latest publication sets out to raise awareness rather than prescribe solutions, taking readers on a tour of his thoughts, allowing them to draw their own conclusions. His book goes beyond the usual apocalyptic predictions of many publications grappling with the fin de siècle. Indeed The Green Imperative is a good read both for specialists and those with a lay interest in design which, according to Papanek, should be all of us.
