City planners take note. If people, specially the
elderly, are to keep fit, don’t do away with such things as post boxes and the
corner store. According to researchers from Flinders University and the
University of South Australia, people are more likely to exercise if there is a
goal or purpose attached to it such as walking or jogging to the local shops or
posting a letter. The researchers interviewed 111 people from the City of Marion
in Adelaide. They also found that the elderly are more likely to go for a walk
if plenty of public seating is provided and footpaths are kept in good
repair.
