Traffic lights on California’s state highways will soon begin using
light-emitting diodes. The new lights, which pack about 300 individual LEDs into
each lamp, consume about one-sixth the energy and last ten times as long as the
old incandescent bulbs. What’s more, motorists can see the LEDs just as well as
conventional traffic lights, according to researchers at the University of
California at Berkeley.
