Kinship to Mastery, by Stephen Kellert, is about biophilia, a new word to
most. It simply means recognising that human beings are only one form of life on
Earth and that our health—physical, intellectual, and
emotional—depends on appreciating the riches that our links with the
others offer. The thought isn’t new, but increasing environmental mayhem makes
it more urgent. Like Hamlet, as the woman said, the book is full of quotations,
but it is timely. Published by Island Press, $25, ISBN 1559633727.
