The Wellcome Trust, the world’s largest medical research charity, has fired a
warning shot across the bows of British universities, which want charities to
help pay for the upkeep of basic infrastructure such as libraries and equipment.

start spending more elsewhere. The trust has now pledged £3 million over
the next three years in grants to scientists in the Republic of Ireland. The
Dublin government has promised to match this figure.
