The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, founded in 1847, has played a key
role in creating the modern world. An account of its evolution, with some added
extras, is given in Progress through Mechanical Engineering. There are
fascinating prints and photographs of early railway locomotives, steam and gas
turbines, 1930s-style motor industry automation, the Eurofighter, space
vehicles, robotics and computer-aided design. Unfortunately, John Pullin’s
roundabout style of writing makes considerable demands on the reader;
well-directed editing could have transformed a worthy review into an inspired
account. Published by Quiller Press, £28, ISBN 189916328X.
