Measure for Measure by Thomas Levenson has a subsidiary title that says
it’s about how music and science together have explored the Universe. This seems
a dubious proposition, despite the obvious connection between music and
mathematics. Once past Pythagoras and the music of the spheres, the partnership
seems less arm-in-arm than handcuffed. Nevertheless, both activities are
concerned with order, and Levenson has produced a lively and thoroughly
