An electronic nose is being tested by researchers at the University of
Florida in Gainesville to see if it can sniff out bad seafood before it upsets
people’s stomachs. The nose uses changes in conductivity of a polymer sensor to
detect chemicals from bacteria that cause food poisoning. The team say tests
last month on good and bad shrimps showed the nose to be in perfect agreement
with inspectors from the Food and Drug Administration.
