Chemists at the University of Tokyo have come up with a coating that breaks
down grime and kills bacteria when it is exposed to ordinary daylight. Kazuhito
Hashimoto and his colleagues have enhanced the properties of titanium
dioxide—a known photocatalytic antibacterial agent—so it can work in
daylight as well as in artificial ultraviolet light. Hashimoto expects to see
self-cleaning cars on the streets as early as next month.
