The British government is drafting tough laws to tackle advertisers who send
junk faxes and make unsolicited phone calls. If passed, the Telecommunications
(Data Protection and Privacy) Regulations will let anyone with a phone line opt
out of junk by registering with a central database. The laws should be in force
by the end of the year. The government says that if opting out fails, the law
will be changed so that people only get junk if they ask for it.
