The day of ultrathin televisions you can hang on your wall is getting closer.
Pioneer in Japan has developed a follow-up to plasma panels, which uses the
electroluminescent (EL) properties of some carbon compounds to generate light
when a voltage is applied. The company started by creating a monochrome version
and now has a colour version in which EL compounds emit red, green or blue
light. The panel can be as little as four millimetres thick, and can also be
viewed from oblique angles.
