Massachusetts Institute of Technology is patenting 鈥渆lectronic ink鈥
technology (W0 98/41898-9). This involves an electronic 鈥減age鈥 which sandwiches
a suspension of coloured particles in clear fluid between transparent
electrodes. When current is fed to parts of an electrode, particles gather at
the surface, creating a visible mark. The mark remains after the current has
been removed, until fresh current is applied to change the pattern. The
particles are coated with reflective metal or fluorescent dye, to make them look
brighter and more like ink on paper.
