A drug-administering microchip could also add an olfactory dimension to
television. The chip can store a large number of drugs and release them under
remote control. It was designed to be implanted in the body, but its developers
at Massachusetts Institute of Technology say it could store smelly substances
related to TV footage. Described in Nature (vol 398, p 335), the chip
has 34 reservoirs, each holding up to 25 nanolitres of a liquid, solid or gel.
When a current is applied to a reservoir, a tiny gold membrane breaks down,
releasing the contents.
