Help is at hand for drivers with a poor sense of direction, in the shape of a
car navigation system developed by NTT of Japan. Instead of simply showing a
two-dimensional map on a small LCD screen, the system labels live video footage
of the view outside the car with local information from a database of landmarks,
features and key buildings. A computer detects the angle of the camera, checks
it against the car’s speed and position, and then works out what the on-board
camera is looking at.
