Only 31 states in the US officially require high schools to teach students
about evolution. Lawrence Lerner of California State University at Long Beach
reports in Nature (vol 407, p 287) that in 19 states, school standards
for biology, geology and cosmology either ignore evolution, or refer to it in
Creationist terms. Kansas will soon abandon the Creationist science standards it
adopted last year. Nearly all the Creationists on the school board were defeated
in party elections last month and will not stand for election to the board in
November.
