Readers of the British Medical Journal have a unique chance to vote
the journal’s editor out of his other job. Richard Smith is also an honorary
professor in medical journalism at Nottingham University. He’s putting this job
on the line to stoke up debate on whether universities should accept donations
from tobacco companies. Smith wants the university to return £3.8 million
it got from British American Tobacco to build a centre for the study of
corporate and social responsibility. Colin Campbell, vice chancellor of
Nottingham University, is defending the university. Visitors to the journal’s
website can vote on this issue and on whether or not Smith should give up his
professorship.
