The largest roof-mounted solar power array in the US is due to go live next
week at the high-security Santa Rita Jail in California. With the price of
electricity skyrocketing in the state due to power shortages, prison
administrators in Dublin, California, say they’ll more than recoup the
$4.4 million invested in installing the 6500-square-metre array. It can
generate up to 500 kilowatts and county officials hope to sell any excess
electricity back to the power grid. Strong, tempered glass protects the 4500
solar tiles, just in case the inmates run riot.
