Women will soon be able to use a wristwatch-like device to tell them when
they are ovulating, and so are most likely to conceive. The gadget, from
Pheromone Sciences of Canada, gives a woman up to four days’ advance notice of
ovulation. It works by measuring changes in the acidity of sweat. This is
determined by hormone levels, which indicate the woman’s fertility status. A
chemical sensor in the device measures the acidity levels, and changes in these
are analysed by a microprocessor to determine whether a woman is fertile,
non-fertile or ovulating. The results are displayed on an LCD screen. Trials
show the device correctly predicts ovulation to within two days in 76 per cent
of subjects.
