Treespotting

Collins Tree Guide by Owen Johnson and David More, Collins, £25, ISBN 0007139543 Reviewed by Roy Herbert

DAVID More’s illustrations astonish by their beauty and detail. Owen Johnson provides the steps to identifying trees in Britain and non-Mediterranean Europe.

Tree watching, the authors say, is an engrossing but under-subscribed hobby. This guide should make it more popular. Britain’s trees, for example, are far more varied than many realise. The service tree, or “chequersâ€, has berries that taste like dates, from which you can make an alcoholic drink – hence the pub name. There’s lots more odd, interesting information here.
