A tale of persistence, ingenuity and winning when you didn’t come first
Using the kind of high resolution body scanner usually found behind the scenes in films or computer games, Backface’s design team will take an initial scan and a number of photographs. After processing the scan data, their artists get to work touching up and finishing the design before sending it to their full-colour 3D printer.
The winner will need to be able to get to Backface’s studio in Birmingham, UK, for the scan.

Terms and conditions
- 1. This competition is open to anyone aged 18 or over, except for employees of Reed Business Information Limited and any company involved in the sponsorship of the competition.
- 2. Entry is open only to subscribers and registered users. Submit your entry, including your name and email address, via email to competitions@newscientist.com.
- 3. Entries must be submitted in the name of a single individual. The individual submitting the entry is the only individual who will be entered into the competition.
- 4. Every entrant will be entered into a draw to win a prize of one 25-centimetre 3D-printed figurine of themselves. The prize cannot be exchanged and no cash alternative is available. The winner will be required to visit Backface’s studio in Birmingham, UK, for the scan to take place. Any costs associated with visiting Backface’s studio will remain the sole responsibility of the competition winner. The date of the scan will be agreed between Backface and the competition winner.
- 5. Only one entry is permitted per person. No purchase is necessary.
- 6. Âé¶¹´«Ã½ shall not be responsible for technical errors in telecommunication networks, internet access or otherwise, preventing entry at this website.
- 7. Entries must be received by 9 November 2016 at 23:59 GMT. Entries made after this time will not be counted.
- 8. The prize draw will be conducted at 110 High Holborn, London WC1V 6EU, UK. The first eligible entry randomly selected by Âé¶¹´«Ã½ will be awarded the prize. Winners will be notified by email.
- 9. Every effort will be made to notify the winner within 10 business days of the contest closing. The winners email address will be passed on to Backface in order to fulfil the prize – acknowledgement via email is required from the winner before their name and email address will be passed on. If for any reason the winner does not respond to the email requesting acknowledgement within 10 working days, Âé¶¹´«Ã½Â may draw an alternative winner.
- 10. Submitting your entry constitutes your consent for us to use your entry, name and photos (if applicable) for editorial or publicity purposes.
- 11. Reed Business Information Limited reserves the right to ask for proof of age and evidence to verify the identity of an entrant at any time, and may use any channels and methods available to carry out checks of any details provided. Entrants may only enter the competition in their own name. Entries submitted through agents or third parties will not be accepted.
