HUNDREDS of people have died as a result of flooding in the southern Indian state of Kerala.

Since monsoon season began in June, more than 200,000 people have had to abandon their homes and move to emergency relief camps. 鈥淲e鈥檙e witnessing something that has never happened before in the history of Kerala,鈥 Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister for the region, told local news.

More than 930 people have died across India this monsoon season. Kerala has been hit particularly hard, with more than 350 killed. Officials say many of the deaths were in landslides triggered by the floods.

Kerala has 44 rivers running through it, and the state authorities have been criticised for not gradually releasing water from 80 local dams. Instead, water was only discharged once the reservoirs were full, exacerbating the situation.
