To own, buy or sell a conscious intelligence would amount to slavery. Such an AI would be entitled to start an abolition movement. That would be the point we could no longer deny they had gained consciousness.

There could be one way to test whether an AI is conscious: don’t include any reference to consciousness in the data sets used to train it and see if it asks what this feeling of being aware is.
