Did you know 1 in 3 people born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia in their lifetime? Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer, and not a natural part of aging – it’s caused when a disease damages nerve cells in the brain.

Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia care and research charity. They know the steps it will take to create a future where dementia no longer devastates lives. And they’re leading the way, providing help and hope to people living with dementia.

Investment in research is key if we want to beat dementia. Alzheimer’s Society’s pioneering research programme works in collaboration with world-leading scientists and people affected by dementia, ensuring the research they fund is of the highest quality and has the most meaningful impact on the lives of people living with this devastating condition.

Alzheimer’s Society supports world class research into Alzheimer’s disease and other rarer types of dementia, including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia, so no one with dementia is left behind.

With the help of their incredible supporters, Alzheimer’s Society is the only dementia charity that funds all types of dementia research from basic biomedical to understand the underlying causes of the diseases, through to clinical and care research.

Together, they’re making breakthrough discoveries in how we improve diagnosis, understand the causes of dementia, develop effective treatments, deliver better care, and ultimately find a cure.

In 2023/24 Alzheimer’s Society spend on activities to support dementia research, including their innovation programme, was £23.6million.

  • Over 400 researchers are working with the charity across the UK right now
  • Alzheimer’s Society is supporting over £51m of active research today
  • Alzheimer’s Society Doctoral Training Centres will support up to 90 new researchers to take their first steps in dementia research.
