Gallery: Images that morph before your eyes

This public sculpture of a cylindrical mirror anamorphosis with a mosaic image will be created in Kitchener, Ontario next year. It is a collaboration between the artist Allan MacKay and Professor James Hunt

An is a picture that can only be interpreted when viewed from a particular angle, or through a transforming optical device like a mirror.

Anamorphosis has gone in and out of fashion over the past 500 years. The first known examples are in ‘s notebooks – he was one of the earliest contributors to this geometry of perspective.

The process is also of interest to mathematicians, and on 12 December a public seminar on the of anamorphic art is being held at the . Among other events, will be demonstrating his free software for creating anamorphic art, .

On 13 December, the National Gallery is hosting , an event exploring anamorphic images and the different methods used by artists to create them.
