This photo of bison roaming the colourful shores of the Grand Prismatic Spring in Yellowstone National Park has landed on the shortlist for the Society of Biology photography competition.
The Grand Prismatic Spring – the largest hot spring in the United States – gets its outer colours from the orange and red bacteria that grow around its edge. They contrast strongly with the intense blue of the deep, hot, sterile water at the centre of the pool.
