Every great upheaval in the world’s climate produces dramatic changes to life on the planet. As global temperatures begin to incease and patterns of rainfall change, the way plants respond to the new conditions will determine what the Earth looks like in the 21st century

A WORLD in the grip of the greenhouse effect will be a very different place from the one we know today. By the middle of the next century the climate will be much warmer, perhaps as much as 12°C warmer near the poles. Patterns of rainfall will change: some places will be wetter, others drier.…
