Thirty-four species of plants and animals have disappeared from the
US in the past decade because the US Fish and Wildlife Service cannot enforce
its own laws, says a report by the inspector general of the US Interior
Department, which oversees the FWS. Since 1980, 17 species of animals and
17 plants have disappeared, even though they qualified for protection under
the Endangered Species Act. A further 600 species that are endangered or
threatened are ‘getting little or no protection’, says the report.
