President Bush’s political difficulties have scuttled a new effort to
raise money in Japan to build the Superconducting Supercollider in Texas.
On 5 November, voters in Pennsylvania dealt a crushing defeat to Richard
Thornburgh, a close political ally of Bush who was running for a seat in
the US Senate. The defeat was seen as a rebuke to Bush, who has been heavily
criticised for travelling the globe and ignoring growing economic problems
at home. The next day, Bush cancelled plans for a trip to Japan at the end
of November. During this trip, he was supposed to make a final plea for
money to build the SSC.
