Paris exodus

22 February 1992

More than 2500 scientists in public research institutes are to be
moved out of Paris by 1995, as part of a drive by the French government
to redress the balance between research undertaken in the capital and
in the regions.

At present, 52 per cent of scientists in French public institutes work
in Paris. The proposed changes will reduce this figure to 45 per cent. Scientists
leaving Paris will go to existing or new ‘centres of excellence’ in the
provinces. Researchers have generally welcomed the job transfers.
