Reactor stays shut

4 July 1992

Superphenix the French fast-breeder reactor shut down in 1990 because
air leaked into its liquid sodium coolant, cannot start up again until a
public inquiry has been held, Prime Minister Pierre Beregovoy announced
this week.

Beregovoy said risks of a sodium fire must be ruled out. The inquiry
would allow ‘greater openness for a debate on safety guarantees’.
