Collecting taxes from US citizens will become a bigger government consumer
of information technology than the current record-holders, the US Navy and
Air Force, according to forecasts from the Electronic Industries Association.
Civilian agencies consume 62 per cent of the $25 billion IT budget, and
this figure is expected to rise as defence spending declines. The Internal
Revenue Service, along with the Federal Aviation Administration, will oust
the defence agencies from the top two slots by 1997.
