The engine which Nigel Mansell will drive in his new sport of Indycar
racing has won a British Design Award. The XB engine is made for Ford by
Cosworth Engineering of Northampton. Its castings are aluminium rather than
the usual magnesium steel, to make it light and resistant to corrosion by
its methanol fuel. Six Indycar teams will race with it in 1993. It goes
on display at the Design Council in London this week.
