Philosophers, scientists, historians, writers and educationalists will
be debating the sometimes acrimonious relationship between science and
art at a weekend conference in Bristol, 27 to 28 February. Roy Porter of
the Wellcome Institute leads off with a lecture on ‘The Two Cultures: A
Historical Perspective’, followed by Mary Midgley on ‘Tribal Wars’. Lewis
Wolpert lectures on ‘The Unnatural Nature of Science’, his view that science
cannot be understood by applying commonsense. Other speakers look at science
