Boost for ban

Britain’s top scientist has leant his support to the campaign for a
government ban on tobacco advertising. Michael Atiyah, president of the
Royal Society, last week accused health secretary Virginia Bottomley of
ignoring scientific advice on the issue.

‘If this were an academic argument with no practical consequences, such
a policy would be acceptable,’ he said. ‘But when thousands of lives are
at stake it is difficult to justify.’
