An engineer from India has won this year’s Stockholm Water Prize, an
award which is given for furthering water conservation.

Madhav Chitale won the prize for his pioneering efforts to coordinate
water management in the Indian subcontinent. He masterminded the introduction
of pollution control and quality management throughout India.

Chitale retired recently from government service, and in January became
the secretary-general of the International Commission on Irrigation and
Drainage
