In the long-standing debate as to what extent artificial intelligence
can emulate the human variety (‘I process therefore I am’, 27 March), a
key issue is how the two can be compared objectively. In the field of ‘common-sense
computing’, may I suggest that a reasonable basis for comparison – involving
understanding natural language and using everyday knowledge – is the ability
to solve crossword puzzles?
