Saving genes

30 October 1993

The European Commission wants 20 million Ecus ( £15.5 million)
to conserve threatened varieties of European crops and livestock. It says
the genetic diversity of European agriculture is being ‘substantially eroded’.

The Commission wants environment ministers to give it money to make
an inventory of collections of plant varieties and animal breeds in the
Community, and for projects to catalogue and conserve diversity in each
member state.
