The structural analysis of masonry is the subject of Jacques Heyman’s The Stone Skeleton (Cambridge University Press £35 ISBN 0521 47270 9). The book concentrates on church buildings, particularly the great medieval cathedrals, but the principles are widely applicable. Arches, domes and vaults, buttresses and towers are examined in turn, with many clear illustrations to complement the scholarly text. This work unites and updates much that has been published elsewhere. Excellent for structural engineers, whether students or practitioners. But others may prefer a broader approach, to include aspects not covered by Heyman, such as aesthetics.
