Find that book, tote that archive

By Carole Scott

19 August 1995

ELEVEN “history of science” librarians write eight enlightening essays in The History of Science and Technology. Their collections include books, oral histories, photographs, technical drawings, portraits, instruments, company archives, advertisements, business letters and maps, covering subjects as diverse as chemistry, oceanography, computing and the medical application of electricity.

The essays concentrate on the art of good librarianship – knowing what you have got, organising it, preserving it and getting more of it. Libraries in La Jolla, Munich, Minneapolis, New Brunswick, Wisconsin, Philadelphia and Kansas City figure large. There is much talk of archives, search techniques, data management and keywords.
