Not only does the title of The Alchemy of Love and Lust by Theresa Crenshaw
(Putnam, $23.95, ISBN 0 399 14041 7) border on the feverish; the contents
are somewhat steamy too. Hormones, or “sex soup”, are what control the love
lives of human beings, and Crenshaw explains that there are plenty of them.
Still, humans are not entirely at their mercy and understanding them can
increase happiness. Mixed metaphors and strange adjectives apart, it’s a
valuable publication.
