AMPELOGRAPHY is the skill of identifying grape vines. It is a difficult skill
to practice with authority in Australia. The country has hundreds of grape
varieties, mainly imported from Europe and America. But, according to George
Kerridge from the CSIRO Division of Horticulture, there has been “history of
confusion” about grapes. Varieties, he says, have been wrongly identified or
introduced under several different names. Kerridge, along with Allan
Antcliff, has tried to set the record straight. The result is Wine Grape
Varieties of Australia. It is available for $39.95 from CSIRO
Publishing, PO Box 1139, Collingwood VIC 3066.
