Almost 28 per cent of the eggs laid by loggerhead turtles
in nesting sites between Bundaberg and Agnes Waters in southeast Queensland are
being eaten by foxes, according to a study funded by the Sea World Research and
Rescue Foundation. Goannas account for another 6 per cent, while 9 per cent
drown in high tides. “We always knew that foxes caused many hatchling losses,”
said Stephanie Lemmfrom the University of Queensland. “This is the first
time we’ve been able to establish an accurate figure.”
