John Heymer was a detective, a member of Gwent CID. His history of
investigations into spontaneous human combustion shows all the ponderousness of
police method. But The Entrancing Flame (Little, Brown, £16.99, ISBN 0 316
87694 1) is nonetheless fascinating. It builds the best possible case for the
phenomenon. Heymer thinks that the facts are incontrovertible although they have
not convinced orthodox opinion. There are stomach-churning illustrations.
