SOME people seem to be under the impression that the Net and the World Wide
Web are one and the same thing. This column probably hasn’t done a lot to help,
but that’s because so much of the interesting stuff on the Net is only
available
through the Web. But a typical estimate made last year (at
http://www2.mids.org/ids3/index.html) showed that as many as 13
million people
online—a third of the total—only have access to the Net through
e-mail. These people are denied the delights of surfing the Web, but many
services have sprung up to help them make the most of things.
