Anthony Sampson’s Company Man (HarperCollins, £7.99, ISBN 0 00 638068
9) is a mine of interesting information about companies and their history
stretching back to the 17th century. The East India Company, for example,
supplied many a fine author and philosopher whose nicely paid ten-to-four jobs
left them plenty of time to think and scribble. Sampson analyses the changes
since then—he is particularly interesting on the clash between American
and Japanese cultures. Entertaining and informative.
