Trevor Williams’s Our Scientific Heritage (Sutton Publishing, £20, ISBN
0 7509 0820 3) is a worthwhile companion on any tour of Britain or Ireland. It
is a dictionary of places with connections to science, and includes notes on
what may be found there. The entries are laconic, but will point anyone quickly
to local splendours such as the birthplace of “instant” drinks and the grave of
the discoverer of Tutankhamen’s tomb, Howard Carter. There are maps and an index
of famous names.
