Paul Shepard described himself as an ecological omnivore, with a wide-ranging
interest in everything from the iconography of animals to hunting and
agriculture. Traces of an Omnivore (Island Press, $24.95, ISBN 1 55963
431 6) is a posthumous collection of essays which highlights the seeds sown by
Shepard in the fields of environmental philosophy and deep ecology. A remarkable
intellect, Shepard threw new light on the relationship between humans and their
environment, and reading these essays is well worth the effort.
