THE rugged mountains of central and western Tasmania are regarded as one of
Australia’s most picturesque regions, popular with both bushwalker and
professional naturalist. Jamie Kirkpatrick, a professor of geography and
environmental studies at the University of Tasmania, has written a guide to the
flora and vegetation of the Tasmanian alpine environment. It concentrates on the
areas in which tree growth is absent. The guide, Alpine Tasmania,
contains more than 400 line drawings of plants and colour photographs of the
alpine landscape by Peter Dombrovskis, the renowned Tasmanian
photographer who died suddenly last year ($24.95, Oxford University
Press).
