Return to the fold

24 May 1997

BRITAIN is to rejoin UNESCO, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization.

Margaret Thatcher’s government withdrew in 1985 on the grounds that UNESCO
had become too bureaucratic to fulfil its role of promoting global peace and
security by spreading scientific and cultural knowledge.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office says the government is now satisfied
that UNESCO has sharpened up its performance. “We’re rejoining because we
support its ideals and we want to underline our commitment to a strong UN.”
